In October 2013 we introduced a pen tool to Book Creator, which we then updated in 2019 with new pen styles, and AutoDraw - using artificial intelligence to improve your artwork!
You can use the pen tool to draw, write, trace pictures or annotate books.
1. Open up the pen tool
In your book, tap + and choose the pen tool to get started.
2. Choose your pen thickness and colour
When you start drawing, you basically open up a canvas that appears on top of your book. The drawing you create will be saved as an image once you're done.
Tap the black circle to change the pen colour first. You can choose from solid colours or magic inks (which really are magic!).
Tap the pen icon to choose the pen style. You have 4 options:
And below that you can choose the thickness of the pen.
3. Use your finger or a stylus to draw!
Here's one I prepared earlier... I'll let you into a secret, I traced this one. Because the drawing feature overlays onto your page, you can still see any elements already on the page.
Use the Eraser to rub out anything mistakes you make, or just tap Undo to remove the last stroke (you can press this multiple times).
Tap Done when you're finished and you'll see the picture appears as an image on your page, which can be resized just like any other image in Book Creator. Tap on the image and tap the inspector and you can move the image backwards and forwards through the layers on the page (useful if you want the drawing to appear behind some text, for example).
Note: you can edit the drawing once it's finished by tapping on the drawing, which will open up the canvas again. You can use the eraser to remove parts of it or add to the canvas.
4. How to use AutoDraw
Choose the AutoDraw pen (the bottom pen that says 'AUTO' on it. Start drawing and along the top toolbar you will see suggestions for what image you are trying to draw. Simply tap on the image you illustration you want, and it will be added to your page.
5. Adding emojis
Tap on the emoji icon in the toolbar and you can choose from hundreds of emoji icons to add to you page. Once you've added one to the page, you can resize it as you would any normal picture in Book Creator, using the blue handles.
6. Using the pen tool for annotation
A useful way to use the pen tool would be to annotate work, or perhaps teachers could use it as a way of marking work done by students.
Below you can see I have annotated the Getting Started tutorial book included in the app.
Another idea would be to use the highlighter pen to highlight words or sentences in a paragraph of text.
